How To Know Bliss
A deep dive into the history and meaning of yoga through the lens of yoga’s key philosophical text, the ancient Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali.
Who am I? Where did I come from? Where am I going? What is my life's purpose? These are the questions we explore in How To Know Bliss.
Who is this course for?
-
All students and teachers of yoga will appreciate the rich overview of yoga's history that this course brings to understanding yoga’s ancient roots, as well as the effect of its modern innovations and transformations through the centuries.
We access this knowledge through the stories, beliefs and practices of the mantra chanting Vedic people of India’s north-west; through the ideas and influences of karma and re-birth that the great kingdoms of the Gangetic plain contributed to yoga’s philosophical development… and through the innovations of the great sages of India’s colonial and modern eras, who influenced so much of modern yoga in the West.
This really is a journey into exploration and deep understanding of “how life works” and how we can find eternal bliss. Even if you’re not a yogi you will derive great insight into the big questions of existence; and develop a curiosity to explore and understand your deeper “self”.
Note: everyone that completes the course receives a Certificate of Completion recognising your study. This course also counts as 30 hours credit towards completing our 200 hour foundational Yoga Teacher Training course - Roots of Yoga; which you can undertake part time over four learning modules. For more information click here to navigate directly to that course page, or email us to arrange a phone consultation.

For regular practitioners of yoga, this course represents a unique opportunity to explore the meaning behind the techniques - through discussion and conversation; as well as via daily meditative, inward focused practice of the methods that encourage us to embody the learnings.
Note: You don’t need to have a regular yoga practice to enjoy this course and our daily practice sessions. All practices are floor based, supported, and require little or no previous experience of physical yoga techniques.
-
Yoga Teachers - new or experienced - undertaking this course will be thrilled to be able offer this knowledge to their own students, with new understanding, a deeper knowledge of yoga’s history and philosophical underpinnings, and via new techniques and practices introduced throughout the course.
If it’s been a while since you last studied this material this course is a must and will surely spark your inner yoga fire again!
Note: Yoga Teachers registered with Yoga Alliance who complete this course receive a certificate of recognition that can be used as 30 hours continuing education credit with Yoga Alliance.
“Everyone should take this course at least once in their life.”

To understand yoga today and what it means, we must first lean into its rich history by getting to know the peoples and traditions that contributed to yoga, as well as how, when and in what way they contributed.
Yoga is thousands of years old, yet its deeper meanings still remain relevant and inspiring today. Why is that? This course is specifically designed to explore this question starting with a journey right back to yoga’s roots, following the fascinating stories of yoga’s early thinkers and contributors including the Vedic people of the pre-classical period who entered the Indian sub-continent around 3,000 years ago, as well as the existing inhabitants of the the Gangetic plain around central-northern India (where the historical Buddha was born).
It is really the meeting, blending and cross-pollination of the ideas, religions and philosophies of these two cultures that culminates in the development of yoga as one of the key pillars of Indian philosophy and religion; and one cannot hope to understand yoga without first knowing its fascinating history.
Following this time of cultural exchange and development of ideas we enter the Classical Period of Yoga and meet the sage Patañjali who synthesises yoga into a formal system of understanding and practice.
Pataṇjali’s Yoga Sūtras - a relatively short work of just 195 verses (around 1200 words) - is the main subject of our course, and the most famous of all yoga manuscripts. In this ancient text, the author sets out a vision of the birth, structure and workings of the universe as we experience it; explaining what that means in terms of how we experience it; and then shows us a path of action towards eternal bliss.
It is from the action part of the text that we get the famous “8 limbs of yoga,” taught as the foundation of most modern yoga teacher training programs.
The Yoga Sūtras offer far more though, than just the practical methods outlined in the 8 limbs. They give us understanding and explanation for all the suffering and disappointments we encounter during our lives, as well as the hope and methods for achieving everlasting happiness.
Even if you have encountered the 8 limbs before, it is really the overall schema of the cosmos, and what drives its workings, that will resonate with you.
Are you ready to explore the possibility of eternal bliss?
This course is a perfect place to begin your deeper yoga journey - we even dip into some elementary Sanskrit (the language of yoga) - and we constantly bring the Sūtras themes and ideas into the context of our modern times so that we can apply the teachings here and now.
Existing yoga teachers will also be blown away by this course. It will open up a whole new way of speaking about and teaching yoga to your students.
Note: Our easy guide - 🟢 🟢 🟢 ⚪️ ⚪️” - appears in the Course Features section of each course summary in order to give you a quick insight into the main topics covered, as well as what emphasis is placed on each of the topics. The more “🟢”, the more the emphasis on that topic. E.g. for some courses, theory is more prominent; in others practice is more prominent; and so on.
-
Each day begins with a gentle morning yoga class where we explore key techniques and practices that we will be covering in our course; giving us the ideal opportunity to absorb and embody the teachings.
Feeling the effects of the practices is key to understanding their efficacy and power. After all, yoga is a practice, not just an idea.
-
You will be introduced to practices, techniques and methods that you may not have come across before.
You will be guided through these with the further opportunity to discuss them with our course host, and to break them down so that you better understand them.
For this course you will leave with a book that outlines all that we have learned, including instructions for the daily practices so that you can continue your self-practice long after the course, confident in the knowledge of the techniques you have learned.
This guide is invaluable to all, but existing yoga teachers might especially find this a valuable resource for their own teaching.
-
Many of our courses include sessions where students practice teaching what they have learned to each other, in order to grow their skills - especially for those wanting to teach what they have learned.
However, this course is mainly theory focused, with our practice of techniques and methods mainly confined to our morning yoga class.
For those wishing to teach the techniques, our course host will be available to offer you guidance, but this optional and not mandatory.
-
Our courses come with some of the most comprehensive materials you could wish for.
For this course you will receive an exclusive complimentary 200+ page book written especially for How To Know Bliss, and unavailable anywhere else.
The course book summarises our learnings, as well as providing detailed instruction for any techniques covered during our time.
Our course manuals go well beyond what is offered in other courses. The reason we put so much into these resources is so that you can spend your time engaging with the instructor/s and host/s, and the course content, without having to be constantly writing notes. In this way you can truly absorb the learnings, knowing that you have the course manual to take with you as a keepsake and constant reference resource that you can return to whenever you wish.
“The most profound experience I’ve had since my teacher training in terms of yogic philosophy.”

Summary of Course Content
-
Enter into the ancient past as we explore the geographical region, cultures and ideas of the peoples that contributed to the formulation and development of yoga as a philosophy/religion, as well as a way of practice.
This journey takes us from west Asia, via the mysterious urban dwelling peoples of the Harappan Civilisation; through the centuries-long waves of migration of the nomadic, Sanskrit speaking Vedic peoples entering the Indian sub-continent from central Asia; from the religious ideas of the the greater Kingdoms of the Gangetic plain, and their intermingling with the religious ideas of the Vedic people.
From here we enter the main timeline of our course - the period of Classical Yoga - where we meet the author of The Yoga Sūtras, the sage Patañjali - our key source of study and inspiration.
-
The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali were compiled. some time around the 3rd-4th century of the Common Era (C.E).
Whilst little is known about the author - a sage known only as “Patañjali” - we can gather clues as to his origin and influences for discussion.
In this part of the course we will introduce you to the writing style called “sūtras” and how this has influenced the way in which the text has been passed down from ancient times to today.
We will explore the language that the Sūtras is written in - Vedic Sanskrit - and why this language is considered “perfected”, whilst helping you get your tongue around how to pronounce Sanskrit words.
We will also meet other key figures throughout the history of yoga; figures that have added interpretation and further meaning to the short verses written down by Patañjali almost 2,000 years ago.
-
Our main study and discussion is based around the text itself. But rather than a dry read through of the content, we will instead focus on the major themes and ideas behind it.
The Yoga Sūtras can seem impenetrable on first reading. This is partly due to its sparse style, but mainly because Patañjali already assumes the reader has an understanding of key philosophical and metaphysical concepts that were commonly understood in his time.
So, to really unpack the Sūtras we must familiarise ourselves with how the author - and therefore the yoga school of thought - understood the universe and our place in it. What problems that yoga sees in human existence; and what we can do to overcome those problems to find everlasting bliss.
This is the really fascinating part of this course and the section that brings the most insight and “aha” moments - both for new students of yoga philosophy, and for Yoga Teachers who have never been exposed to these underlying, yet crucial ideas.
-
The most famous part of the Yoga Sūtras are the “8 Limbs of Yoga.” They are the methods one follows to find everlasting bliss.
They are commonly taught as the philosophical component of Yoga Teacher Training courses. Unfortunately though, they are often taught without the theoretical and metaphysical framework that underpins them. Without the framework the methods lose their context and simply become “things to do.”
We take a different approach to explaining and teaching the eight limbs; putting them in their rightful context so that you leave with a real and deep understanding of their purpose - their connection to the way the universe works, and how they take us to blissful self-awareness. This approach really unlocks yoga for you, and gives you context for all the yoga practices we encounter today.
This really is critical. To use an analogy from Christianity. Imagine being taught about Jesus and the Ten Commandments without anyone explaining to you about heaven and hell. Without knowing about heaven and hell and how we can obtain one and avoid the other, there simply would be no context or incentive to live a Christian life.
For us, there is no point learning about the eight limbs without the context and meaning behind them; and this is what makes our course different from other offerings.
In this section of the course you will also learn how there is not just one method for practising yoga - ie, the 8 limbs - but several that are presented in the Sūtras.

Our courses encompass various elements to maximise your enjoyment, engagement and learning… because we all learn in different ways.
Our key pillars include:
✅ Face to face learning. In our opinion there is nothing to rival face to face learning. So all our courses are conducted this way, in small groups, to optimise your experience. Face to face courses offer many benefits compared with online learning, including:
Enriched communication. Communication is more than just verbal. It’s also gestural and “energetic.” The best communication also happens in real time.
Direct feedback. This applies to our conversations as well as to our yoga practices. It’s not optimal to give meaningful corrections or assistance through a screen.
Spontaneous moments of insight. Sometimes our little breakthroughs come not in the main lectures and discussions but in small moments during breaks, i.e. asking a question as we meet each other coming or going, or passing in the hall.
✅ Daily yoga practices. Our practices are designed to suit the nature and content of each course, so will vary in type, techniques shared, as well as level of intensity. For more introspective courses the techniques are gentler and more contemplative; whilst other courses offer more vigorous and energetic practices. Refer to each Course Features section to get a feel for what is on offer. Daily practices also provide the opportunity to be introduced to new techniques whilst absorbing and embodying the learnings.
✅ Analysis and reflection. We always allow time for discussion and reflection of the practices so that you can share your experience, get direct feedback from our trainer/s, and hear the experiences of your fellow students. These rich discussions offer so much insight, as well as ensuring that you understand the techniques being taught.
✅ Lectures and conversation. Each course is rich in theory and methods, but with ample opportunity for group conversation. Students are encouraged to share their points of view in a supported learning environment. Through this method each course evolves its own unique insights as our students flavour the learnings with what they bring from their own life experience. It’s why no two courses are ever the same. Students can also approach the trainer/s one-on-one at appropriate moments during the course if they wish.
✅ Immersive learning. Our courses are designed as immersive experiences, usually running over several consecutive days or longer.
When attending a course we encourage you to treat it as a retreat away from your usual routine and activities. Freedom from distractions allows you the mental space to absorb what you learn. Of course we all have different life situations, so we run each day on time to allow you the structure to get things done outside of course hours. An example course timetable is presented for you in the section below this one.
A further feature of our courses are the amazing books and manuals we create for you - that are available nowhere else. These range from 100-200+ pages, depending on the course length and its nature. The course books include a summary of all we learn, instructions for any techniques taught; and many are rich with images and photos to inspire and guide you.
Knowing you have a resource that you can always refer back to really allows you to engage with the trainer/s and group in real time, without the distraction of constant note taking - leading to a truly immersive learning experience.
“What an absolute privilege it has been to learn from you! Your skill, knowledge and passion are truely inspiring.”
~ Nicole
